Sen. Angus King deserves thanks for his recent vote on a proposal that could put at risk many of Maine’s most cherished protected lands.

He stood up to protect public lands that belong to all of us, such as Maine’s 10 national wildlife refuges, like the well-known and loved Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, and even the White Mountain National Forest – as well as iconic landscapes across the country like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

On March 26, he voted against an amendment introduced by Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski that could allow for selling off certain federal lands, which could result in special interests developing these lands as well as restricting public access.

Sen. Susan Collins initially voted to block the Murkowski amendment, but at the last minute, she switched her vote, allowing it to pass. I am surprised and disappointed by Sen. Collins’ vote because she has been a supporter of protecting lands on which we love to hike, camp and fish.

Sen. King deserves thanks for staying strong on this vote and protecting our natural treasures for future generations.
