An Eliot man has been charged with aggravated assault and other offenses after choking a woman to the point of unconsciousness Friday night, Kittery police said.

Police said they responded to Wyman Street just before midnight after receiving a report of a domestic violence assault.

Police said they found a 55-year-old woman who had been assaulted and choked. She was taken to York Hospital, where she was treated for bruises, broken ribs and released. Police have not released her name.

Byron Buzzell, 40, allegedly fled the Wyman Street scene before police arrived. Police searched the area with a police dog.

Buzzell was located about 5:30 a.m. Saturday on Goodwin Road in Eliot in the area of Frost Hill Road, police said. He was arrested by Kittery and Eliot police without incident.

Buzzell was charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, obstructing the report of a crime, and domestic violence assault. He is being held at York County jail.

Police from Rochester, New Hampshire, also helped with the search.
