SOUTH PORTLAND — Pharmacists at 16 Shaw’s supermarkets, including locations in Biddeford, Saco and Sanford, are now members of Teamsters Local 340.

Teamsters Local 340, headquartered in South Portland, announced in a press release that pharmacists at Osco Drug voted to become members on Monday. The newly organized group consists of 20 pharmacists who work for Osco pharmacies located at 16 Shaw’s supermarkets throughout the state, according to a written statement from Teamsters Local 340.

Other pharmacies who are now members are located in Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Brunswick, Dover-Foxcroft, Ellsworth, Freeport, Lewiston, Portland, Rockland, Scarborough, Waterville and Westbrook, according to National Labor Relations Board documents.

“We are excited to work with the Osco pharmacists in securing them the powerful representation that Teamsters Local 340 can bring to their workplace,” said Brett Miller, president of Local 340, in a written statement. “We will work tirelessly, providing them with the best representation to improve their working conditions and negotiate a strong contract that puts their rights and protections on paper.”

A posting on the Local 340 Facebook page said the union was proud that the pharmacists had voted to join the teamsters. “Welcome to the family,” it read.

“Labor is under attack in our great state. Now more than ever, workers are uniting to have a voice at the table,” said Local 340 organizer Ed Marzano in a written statement. “Osco pharmacists delivered that message loud and clear by voting for Teamster representation.”

Teamsters Union Local No. 340 represents about 3,800 workers in both public and private sectors.
