SCARBOROUGH — The Maine Recreation and Park Association and Cape Elizabeth Community Services are collaborating to recycle tennis balls in several communities.

The groups recently joined a national movement led by Retour Tennis to keep tennis balls out of landfills, where they take about 450 years to decompose, according to Deb Smith, MRPA executive director.

Bins for tennis ball disposal will be set up at courts in more than a dozen cities and towns across southern Maine, including South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Freeport, Yarmouth, Bath and Skowhegan.
