BRUNSWICK — Lindsay Picard scored five goals and also had an assist, and Emma Beecher collected four goals and two assists to lead Bowdoin to a 22-9 win over Bridgewater State in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Sunday afternoon at Ryan Field.

Bowdoin (16-3) raced out to a 7-2 lead before Bridgewater State (13-9) cut the deficit to 7-5 with 8:35 left in the first half. The Polar Bears responded by scoring eight straight goals over the final 7:35 of the half.

Megan O’Connor added three goals and an assist, and Clare McLaughlin had two goals and two assists. Eleven players scored for Bowdoin, which set a season-high for goals in a game.

The fourth-ranked Polar Bears will face The College of New Jersey at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Hartford, Connecticut.

SOFTBALL

ALBERTUS MAGNUS 5, SOUTHERN MAINE 4: The third-seeded Falcons (27-13) took advantage of three errors to score three runs on just one hit in the top of the sixth inning as they rallied past the second-seeded Huskies (24-20) in an elimination game at the ECAC Division III New England tournament in Waltham, Massachusetts.

After giving up a run in the first inning, USM responded with three runs in the bottom half. Amber Kelly tied the game with an RBI double, Mary Caron followed with an RBI single, and Samantha Crosman hit a sacrifice fly.

Albertus Magnus got a run in the fourth before taking the lead in the sixth.

USM closed to within 5-4 in the seventh on an RBI single by Courtney Davis. Morgan Scavetta then tried to score after Kristen Duross flied out to right, but she was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Amber Kelly took the loss despite not giving up an earned run. She scattered eight hits, struck out seven and walked one.

WHEATON 13, HUSSON 2: Morgan Walsh went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and two RBI to pace a 15-hit attack for the Lyons (28-13) as they downed the Eagles (33-8) in five innings in an NCAA Division III regional final at Norton, Massachusetts.

Madeline Hatch added a pair of hits, including a home run. Wheaton scored three runs in the first inning, then added five in the second and five in the third.

Husson got a run in the bottom of the first when Kayla Merrill scored on a wild pitch. Casey Lopes singled home Merrill in the third inning.

Lopes finished with three hits.
