NORTH BERWICK — Firefighters from nine departments responded to a three-alarm fire that caused heavy damage at a home on Bauneg Beg Pond in North Berwick on Tuesday afternoon.

North Berwick Fire Chief Brian Gosselin said the left front of the house at 121 West First St. was ablaze when his firefighters arrived after 3 p.m.

No one was at home at the time and no one was hurt. Investigators believe an electrical problem started the fire and have ruled it an accident.

Gosselin said the fire went to a third alarm because fire trucks had difficulty getting to the house on the narrow dirt road in the lakeside community.

Nine other departments were on scene providing mutual aid: South Berwick, Berwick, Ogunquit, Wells, Sanford, Eliot, Lebanon, Rollinsford, New Hampshire, and Rochester, New Hampshire. Neighbors in kayaks and pontoon boats watched the firefighters battle the blaze from the lake.
