Re: “Portland planners back senior housing on Stevens Avenue” (May 12):

The May 12 meeting with the Portland Planning Board on a zoning change to allow new housing was futile. The board pretended interest in the concerns of Deering Center residents, but their decision had already been made.

While terms like “senior housing” and “affordable housing” were buzzwords designed to evoke guilt and feelings of responsibility in those against the housing, nearly all the units will be sold at prices most seniors can’t afford.

Portland neighborhoods are like dominos being knocked down one by one, and we seem unable to affect what is happening to our city. Sadly, money will always be the most important factor.

If the Planning Board were really concerned, at least half of these units would actually be affordable housing, and the density and quality of life in the neighborhood would be reconsidered.
