ETNA – Authorities are investigating who dug up a grave in the town of Etna and why.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department was contacted early Friday morning by the Pleasant Hill Cemetery sexton who discovered the dug-up grave site.

Family members of the graves disturbed told WCSH-TV that one of the three family graves was uncovered completely and pry marks were found on the cement vault containing the casket.

Jason Godin, whose family has lived in Etnafor decades, told WCSH-TV that his relatives would have been very upset.

“They would be devastated, they really would,” he told WCSH-TV. “I don’t think there are any words you could really say.”

Other family members say they do not understand why someone would try to break into the graves, according to the WCSH-TV video report.

“I have no idea,” Angie Godin, told the station. “When something bad happens you come up with all different kinds of ideas, I don’t know, I wish I knew.”

Investigators believe the vandalism happened between late Thursday evening and Friday morning.

Sgt. Roy Peary told WMTW-TV that the vandal or vandals removed enough soil to reach the vault holding the casket of a woman who died in 2003. Peary said he found what look like pry marks on the vault.

The woman’s relatives say no jewelry or valuables were buried with her.

Anyone who may have information about the incident or who may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 1-800-696-5403.
