The U.S. House is considering a bill, H.R. 1599, “The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act.”

This bill is misleading. It would end states’ freedom to pass local laws that require ingredients to be listed or asks that it be stated if the food is GMO-free – no genetically modified organisms.

Why the concern? We have experienced an increase in allergies. Many GMO-grown foods are sprayed with chemicals. We have a buildup of chemicals in our bodies. The impact is greater in young children that are growing. Many chemicals can harm the developing nervous system or mimic hormones.

The food industry is concerned about cost.

I am concerned about health and safety.

Parents have the right to know what is in the food they buy for their children. If unlabeled, they can’t make a choice.

The international agency for research on cancer of the World Health Organization declared that glyphosate is a probable carcinogen. Many of the panel members would have preferred to list it as a known carcinogen. This chemical is often used as a pesticide.

Support our state’s right to act for the people’s good.
