A truck carrying lumber spilled its load on Interstate 295 between exits 5 and 6 in Portland late Monday afternoon, causing traffic delays in both the northbound and southbound lanes at the start of the commuter rush hour.

While headed south in the passing lane just before 4 p.m., the driver of a tractor-trailer carrying a load of finished lumber swerved when a white box truck began to move toward his vehicle, said Maine State Police Trooper Lawrence Rose.

The lumber truck struck the median and spilled about half of its load into the northbound and southbound roadways, Rose said. No one was injured in the crash, which took place about 4 p.m.

Traffic was reduced to one lane in both directions, Rose said. Police have not located the box truck, and no one has been cited for the crash, he said.

The tractor-trailer was cleared from the scene by about 5 p.m., Rose said.
