In the Scarborough school budget debate, there has been little discussion of what we are getting for our tax dollars.
One perspective is that the $39 million school budget works out to about $12,000 for each of our 3,100 students, or less than $7 per hour on an average 10-hour day.
The anticipated increase in my real estate tax will be about $480, 66 percent ($317) of which goes to the schools, which works out to 10 cents per student for the year!
I am no more eager to pay taxes than anyone else, but we are getting a great deal for our tax dollars in Scarborough.
