Sam Solomon and Anthony Digifico each stroked a two-run single as South Portland scored five runs in the second inning on the way to an 8-6 win over Portland in the SMAA baseball championship game at Old Orchard Beach.

South Portland advanced to the title game with a 5-2 semifinal victory over Marshwood behind Brad Sowerby’s three-hitter.

Portland beat Thornton Academy 11-0 in a five-inning semifinal, with John Williams driving home five runs.

SOFTBALL: Morgan Achorn’s two-run homer in the top of the first was enough for Lincoln Academy to beat Gardiner 2-0 in the KVAC Class B softball title game in Waterville.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Sophie Sreden scored five goals to lead Morse to a 16-8 victory over Oceanside in the KVAC Class B girls’ championship game at Thomas College in Waterville.

Amanda Gagne added two goals and four assists.

Abbey LaCasse scored three times for the Mariners.

BOYS’ LACROSSE: Josh Dorr scored five goals and T.J. Sullivan added four to lead Brunswick to a 15-7 win over Messalonskee in the KVAC Class A title game at Thomas College in Waterville.

BASEBALL

NECBL: UMaine’s Kevin Stypulkowski was 2 for 4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBI, helping Vermont defeat Sanford 10-1 in the Mainers’ home opener.

Simon Rosenbaum also drove in four runs for the Mountaineers (1-1).

Dalton Thomas’ grounder scored Brandon Bingel for the Mainers (1-1) in the first inning.

NORTH COUNTRY BASEBALL LEAGUE: Jeremy Hall pitched six solid innings with seven strikeouts, but the Old Orchard Beach Surge fell to the Road City Explorers 6-5 in 10 innings at The Ballpark.
