South Portland High School held its graduation at 2 p.m. June 7 at the high school. The following students were named top scholars for the class of 2015.

Brown, JacobJACOB BROWN, valedictorian
He is the son of Theresa and Jim Brown and is active in basketball, baseball, soccer and the math team. He’s been recognized for outstanding achievement in honors math, honors biology and chemistry and AP Statistics. Jacob is a member of the National Honor Society, and is a past recipient of the Yale Book Award. Outside of academics, Jacob enjoys watching movies, reading, playing ball, snowboarding, and going to the beach. He will be attending Boston College and would like to pursue a career in medical research.

young, abbyABBY YOUNG, salutatorian
She is the daughter of Danielle and Stuart Young and is a member of National Honor Society, World Language Honors Society and Interact. She is vice president of the Spanish Club, and plays softball and soccer. She has been recognized for outstanding achievement in math and received the Harvard Book Award. In addition to her work with Interact, she volunteers at Brown Elementary School. Abby works as a sales associate at TJ Maxx, and babysits. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, sports, and hanging out with family. Abby plans to study mathematics at Bentley University.

Turner, MorriganMORRIGAN TURNER
She is the daughter of Colleen Jones-Turner and Peter Turner. Morrigan is vice president of the class of 2015, as well as vice president of the Student Senate. She serves as president of the school’s Amnesty International chapter, performs in both the drama and musical productions, competes on math team, participates on the Civil Rights Team, and is a member of National Honor Society. She has served as a student representative for the South Portland School Board and the SPHS Building Committee. Morrigan enjoys modern dance and working with second graders as a volunteer at Skillin Elementary School. She has been recognized for excellence in French and Biology, and was the recipient of the Cornell Book Award and the DAR Good Citizen Award. In her free time, Morrigan works at Red’s Dairy Freeze and at Studio 408 as an assistant dance teacher. Additionally, she was involved with Seeds of Peace International camp for three years. Morrigan will attend Vassar College in the fall, where she plans to major in earth science, with a focus on environmental policy.

SanGiovanni, LilyLILY SANGIOVANNI
She is the daughter of Kimberly and Robert SanGiovanni and serves as senior class president and treasurer of the student senate. She is a member and vice president of the National Honor Society, and an active member of the Civil Rights Team, Interact, marching band and jazz ensemble, varsity lacrosse and Maineiax Club Lacrosse. Lily has been recognized for outstanding academic performance in both honors biology and honors chemistry, was a recipient of the Maine Youth Leadership Award, Bowdoin Book Award, and the All-American Honorable Mention 2014 Women’s Lacrosse. She volunteers at the soup kitchen and at community events, helps to raise money for several charities, and works with elementary students at Skillin School’s 21 Club. Additionally, she finds time to babysit and works during the summer at Shooting Stars daycare program. Lily will attend Wesleyan University, where she will pursue a career in the sciences, possibly neuroscience or pediatrics.

Black, HollyHOLLY BLACK
She is the daughter of Irena and the late Paul Black and is actively involved in athletics, serving as captain of varsity volleyball as well as varsity basketball, and plays lacrosse. She is a National Honor Society member, participates in Interact, and plays classical violin. With Interact, she has served the community in a variety of ways including cleaning local parks, helping other students, and serving at the soup kitchen. In her free time, Holly enjoys playing the piano, skiing, reading and traveling. Holly has been recognized for her excellence in the classroom as well as on the court. She has been honored for excellence in physics and as an AP Scholar, and received the Wellesley Book Award. She was chosen for the SMAA All-Conference Volleyball 2nd Team, SMAA All-Academic Teams for Volleyball and Basketball, and received SMAA All-Conference Volleyball Honorable Mention. During summers, Holly works at Saltwater Grille. In the fall, Holly will enter Middlebury College’s engineering dual-degree program. She hopes to help fight cancer through bio-medical engineering or research.

Onos, SydneySYDNEY ONOS
She is the daughter of Connie and the late Steve Onos and plays varsity girls’ soccer and A Team Ultimate Frisbee. She is a member of the Spanish Club, is treasurer of Interact and is a member of the Outing Club. She serves the community in a variety of ways, including at the soup kitchen and at various community events. She has participated in the Telling Room Project in Portland. Sydney has been recognized for excellence in ceramics and chemistry, and is a past recipient of the Smith Book Award. She is a member of both National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society, and has participated in Rotary’s Youth Leadership program (RYLA). During her off hours, Sydney has worked at the Cookie Jar. Next fall, she will attend the University of Maine at Orono as a biology major. Her future plans may include dentistry/orthodontics.

Micucci, SarahSARAH MICUCCI
She is the daughter of Beth and Ken Micucci and has been captain of the varsity swim team as well as the Portland Polar Bears Swim Team. She’s played varsity softball, and participated in Spanish Club. Sarah attended the Rotary’s Youth Leadership program and participated in Maine Medical Center Research Institute’s Biomedical Research Program. As an Interact member, she has volunteered at Preble Street Soup Kitchen, Skillin Elementary School’s 21 Club, and community events including Peaks to Portland and Tri for a Cure. In addition to swimming, Sarah enjoys wake boarding and water skiing. She has served as an officer in National Honor Society, has been inducted into World Language Honor Society, and has been a past recipient of the Dartmouth Book Award. Her outstanding performance as a swimmer has earned her the Iron Will Award and Coaches’ Award. In addition to academics and athletics, Sarah has been a swim instructor and lifeguard at the South Portland Municipal Pool. Sarah plans to attend University of New England to study pre-med or engineering.

Whitehead, BevanBEVAN WHITEHEAD
He is the son of Camilla Dunham and Tom Whitehead. Bevan has been active as a member of the musical stage crew, Ultimate Frisbee and the History Club. Outside of school, he enjoys sailing, reading, playing cards and baking. His interests include history, current events and geography. He’s a member of both National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. He has been recognized for outstanding performance in AP U.S. History and was a recipient of the College of the Atlantic Book Award. Bevan currently works as a cashier at Hannaford. Next fall, he will attend Vassar College, with plans to double major in chemistry and history. He hopes to find a job that includes traveling the world.

Ferrell, GabyGABRIELLA FERRELL
She is the daughter of Courtney and Tim Ferrell. Gaby has served as student representative to the South Portland School Board, as Student Senate president and class secretary. She’s been an active member of the Civil Rights Team, Ultimate Frisbee, and part of the tech crew for the musical and drama productions. Additionally, she’s been a contributor to Blunt Youth Radio. Gaby works with English Language Learners students at Skillin Elementary School, and is a member of the Planned Parenthood “Teen Team.” Gaby is a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. She’s been recognized for outstanding academic performance in English, and is a past recipient of the Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences. Gaby will attend Barnard College of Columbia University, where she plans to major in sociology and economics.

Mickiewicz, JackmanJACKMAN MICKIEWICZ
He is the son of Kim and Jim Mickiewicz and served as captain of the Golf Team, and has been active in Ultimate Frisbee, the History Club and Math Team. Outside school, he’s participated in Boys & Girls Club Basketball, MSGA and Seeds of Peace. Jackman volunteers at Dyer Elementary School, working with second and third graders, and with the South Portland First Tee Program, teaching golf to kids. In addition to golf, Jackman enjoys juggling, photography, drawing, painting, and Netflix (especially “The Office”). Jackman is a member of both the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society, and has received recognition for excellence in physics and is a past recipient of the Williams College Book Award. He was named to the SMAA 2nd Team All-Conference Golf Team as well as the All-Academic Golf Team. When not playing golf, he may be spotted handling carts and maintaining the driving range at Nonesuch River Golf Club. Jackman plans to dual-major in civil and architectural engineering at the University of Maine at Orono in the fall.
