PARIS — A statewide panel has cleared an Oxford County sheriff’s deputy of wrongdoing for shooting a 31-year-old man during an armed confrontation in Lovell.

Sheriff Wayne Gallant told the Sun Journal on Monday the panel found Cpl. George Cayer’s actions were justified and called the department’s policies for handling armed confrontations more than adequate.

The panel is made up of current and former law enforcement officials.

Cayer had been on paid administrative leave since shooting Dennis Buffington on May 20.

Cayer was cleared to return to work June 13.

Buffington survived and faces multiple charges, including aggravated criminal mischief, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and assault.

The shooting remains under investigation by the state attorney general.
