A Portland telecommunications company won approval for a $3.4 million loan to extend enhanced cellphone coverage in Down East Maine.

The loan was acquired through Mechanics Savings Bank and insured by the Finance Authority of Maine, according to a news release from FAME.

“This approval had tremendous community support from residents, businesses and community leaders who feel good connectivity is a vital business and safety necessity. I can’t thank the folks of Down East Maine enough for their letters for this project to FAME,” said Bob Parsloe, president & CEO of Wireless Partners.

The company, which designs, builds, owns and operates enhanced 4G LTE cellular networks, is veteran-owned and qualified for Pinetree Development Zone certification. It has already invested $1 million in Washington County and eastern Hancock County as a partner with Verizon Wireless.

In the first phase, Wireless Partners is building out 32 new sites of Verizon 4G LTE coverage. Thirteen of the sites will be located on newly constructed tower structures concentrated along the Route 1 corridor between Ellsworth and Calais, and the Route 9 corridor – known locally as the Airline – from Calais to Aurora.
