BANGOR — An Orono man who pleaded no contest to stabbing and blinding his mother’s boyfriend has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

WCSH-TV reports that 22-year-old Dorian Guerin pleaded no contest earlier this month to a charge of elevated aggravated assault in the December 2013 stabbing of 50-year-old Mike Dow.

Prosecutors say Guerin stabbed Dow multiple times in the face, head and upper body during a fight in an Orono rooming house. Dow is permanently blind and requires constant care.

Guerin must also receive substance abuse and mental health treatment while serving four years of probation.

Defense attorney Martha Harris says she thinks the sentence was fair. District attorney Christopher Almy says he feels the sentence should have been higher.
