Where are the voices of the people who voted for Gov. LePage? I’m so ashamed of all the government officials who didn’t stand behind him.

While campaigning, he spelled it out loud and clear that he was going after welfare, so it isn’t anything new. Now that he is doing what he said he was going to do, where are the people who supported him?

True, he is loud and brash, like a bull in a china shop. But thank God for his tenacity – he doesn’t give up. He is just what we need to get welfare reform done.

As it is, he is thwarted at every turn. Finally, this time the Superior Court sided with him on General Assistance for asylum seekers, and he got one foot on the first step to reform.

The disrespect he receives, especially from some of his own party, is deplorable. He is not doing anything illegal; in fact, he is going by federal law and protecting funds for the elderly, disabled and abused.

Evidently, there is a law that gives Portland’s mayor and City Council the right to dictate to me that General Assistance for asylum seekers will be paid for by my property taxes.

I don’t feel that I should pay for people from out of the country when I have worked all my life for my retirement. What happens next year when more come over?

Maine used to be known as “Vacationland” – now it’s “The Welfare State.” Some of the asylum seekers arrive in this country in some state other than Maine, but hear of us being so “giving” that they travel to Portland.

I must sound heartless, but our elderly, disabled and abused should be first in line for assistance. Period!
