Re: “Letter to the editor: Thank you to Portland for GA support and compassion” (July 3), by Hamet Ly:

Mr. Ly’s “thank you” is appreciated, and most of Maine’s citizens are happy for him. That he plans to contribute to Maine’s economy by putting his skills and experience to use as soon as he receives his work authorization papers is also appreciated.

Now, why doesn’t he take it a step further and promise to pay back all that he has received from the state? That would certainly signify a real “thank you” and not just lip service.

Over the years, out of duty (mostly duty, because I had no choice) and honor, I have repaid college loans, auto loans and home loans. This was all done to further my way in life. The money given to Mr. Ly was to save his life. Which is more important?

Maine is a poor state with a high rate of elderly and unemployed. If Mr. Ly and others like him would promise to honor their financial debts and not just promise to become productive citizens, as we all strive to be, it would go a long way toward smoothing the ruffled feathers of citizens who are economically squeezed already.
