Gov. LePage has often claimed to be “speaking for the people of Maine,” and I would like to rebut that.
In particular, his veto letter stated: “The Maine people made it quite clear in November they want tax relief and welfare reform.”
While I doubt that every one of the 294,189 people who voted for LePage did so for the purposes of tax relief and welfare reform, that voter number represents roughly 29 percent of Maine’s voting-age population (1,019,594 people, according to “Population Demographics Maine 2014-2015,” at suburbanstats.org, and 2014 Maine election results, at politico.com).
As a member of the 71 percent of voting-age people in Maine who did not vote for LePage, I find his claim to be wrong in the extreme.
