As a 60-year member of the Maine Medical Association, may I express my delight, and also congratulate Drs. Lisa Ryan and Daniel Oppenheim for finally bringing MMA into a leadership position regarding the changes in our climate, as indicated in their July 11 op-ed (“Maine Voices: Denial, delay by fossil fuel industry have slowed action on climate change”).

When I first began practice in Camden, doctors were considered leaders in the community, and although we now have become for the most part employees, the public still looks to us for guidance.

Already we are dealing with the effects of changes, and it will only become more intense. Thus, thanks once again to Drs. Ryan and Oppenheim for publicly expressing the views held for some time by our national medical organizations.
