NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Massachusetts officials say an inmate accused of killing a dog during a burglary dug a hole in the ceiling of his cell using nail clipper parts in a failed escape attempt last month.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reported that 38-year-old Angel Villanueva of Springfield pleaded not guilty Friday in Northampton District Court to attempted escape and vandalism charges.

Officials said Villanueva dug a 6-inch-by-9-inch hole in his cell ceiling at the Hampshire County Jail. The hole led to a crawl space.

Villanueva has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial in connection with three home break-ins last year, including one in Easthampton where the homeowners’ poodle was killed.
