JULY 12: A rat is trained in an inactive landmine field in Siem Reap province by a member of the Cambodian Mine Action Center. Gambian pouched rats were deployed to Cambodia from Tanzania in April by a Belgian nonprofit organization, APOPO, to help clear mines. They've been trained since they were 4 weeks old. Cambodia is still littered with landmines after emerging from decades of civil war, including the 1970s Khmer Rough "Killing Fields" genocide, leaving it with one of the world's highest disability rates. APOPO has used the rodents for mine-clearing projects in several countries, including Angola, Mozambique, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.
JULY 12: Workers climb a framework to prepare paper lanterns ahead of the annual Mitama Festival at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. Over 30,000 lanterns lit up the shrine, where more than 2.4 million war dead are enshrined, during a four-day festival from July 13 to 16.

A red light (fourth from top) marks where on their descent four men fell to their death on the North Face. All mountaineering activities stop on July 14 on both the Swiss and Italian sides of the Alpine summit in remembrance of the more the 500 people who have died trying to reach the Matterhorn's summit.
JULY 13: A therapist applies traditional moxibustion treatment on a patient in Yiwu, Zhejiang province. Many Chinese believe that applying herbs on acupuncture points during summer can prevent diseases and ailments in the winter.
JULY 14: Workers work next to a pit after a truck and a police kiosk fell into a cave-in on a street in Dingyuan county, Anhui province, China. The area of the cave-in is over 1,000 square feet. Three people were injured in the incident, according to local media.
JULY 14: A boy holds his dog after a Peruvian police operation to destroy illegal gold mining camps in a zone known as Mega 14, in the southern Amazon region of Madre de Dios. Peruvian police razed dozens of illegal gold mining camps at the edge of an Amazonian nature reserve this week, part of a renewed bid to halt the spread of wildcatting in the remote rainforest region. Production from wildcat miners made up about 10 percent of national production before President Ollanta Humala launched the harshest crackdown yet on illegal gold mining last year.

JULY 15: Hanhan ,3, recovers after surgery to implant three pieces of titanium mesh to replace her skull, as her aunt holds her hand at a hospital in Changsha, Hunan province, China. According to local media, Hanhan suffers from hydrocephalus, a medical condition that causes abnormal accumulation of fluid in cavities of the brain. The hospital said she would have to go through more surgeries before making a full recovery.
JULY 15: Riot police officers run through fire as anti-austerity protesters throw petrol bombs during clashes in Athens. Greece's prime minister was fighting to keep his government intact in the face of outrage over an austerity bill that parliament had to pass Wednesday night if the country was to start negotiations on a new bailout and avoid financial collapse. The raft of consumer tax increases and pension reforms will condemn Greeks to more years of economic hardship and has fueled anger among members of the governing left-wing Syriza Party.
