SACO — Maurice L. Gilbert, 88, of Saco, passed away late Wednesday evening on July 29, 2015, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco.

He was born in Biddeford on May 31, 1927, a son of Albert and Beatrice (Metayer) Gilbert. He was educated at Notre Dame de Lourdes School.

Maurice served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Mispillion in the Pacific Corridor during World War II.

He married his wife Rita on May 15, 1954 at St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford.

In 1959, he established Maurice Gilbert Plumbing and Heating. Maurice developed long term relationships, serving the community for over 50 years.

He enjoyed gardening and cultivating blueberry bushes. He also loved to cook and entertain his family and friends.

Mr. Gilbert was a parishioner of the former Notre Dame de Lourdes Church.

He is preceded in death by: one sister, Rita McIntyre.

He is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Rita (Hebert) Gilbert; his seven children, Ronald S. Gilbert and his wife Leah of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Marc L. Gilbert and his wife Pam of Biddeford, Janet M. Tanski of Worcester, Massachusetts, Mary A. Gilbert of Saco, Joan L. Gilbert and her husband Richard Lewis of Saco, Kevin J. Gilbert and his wife Julie of Arundel, and Mike M. Gilbert and his fiancée Angel Kinney of Biddeford; eight grandchildren, Nathan, Andrew, Alex, Nicholas, Azia, Jessica, Evan, Micah, Emily, and Eden; three siblings, Armand Gilbert and his wife Noella, Theresa Delage, and Bernedette Cyr; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3 at St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford. A graveside service with military honors will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
