HARPSWELL — A 75-year-old woman and her dog were killed early Wednesday when they were struck by a pickup truck, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Rita Douglas, of Harpswell Islands Road (Route 24), was walking in the area of Lucky’s Run at 6:40 a.m. when she was hit by a 2012 Nissan Titan pickup truck driven by Isabella Slocum, 16, also of Harpswell, according to the CCSO.

Douglas, who was walking her dog, and Slocum were both heading north on Harpswell Islands Road. Douglas and the dog reportedly died on impact.

The sheriff’s department, the Orr’s-Bailey Island Fire/EMS Department, and the Brunswick Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the accident, the cause of which remained under investigation.

One lane of Harpswell Islands Road was closed for several hours after the crash.
