Sen. Bill Diamond continues to hit the proverbial nail on its head – this time with his continuing push for more public awareness on the dangers of carbon monoxide, as told in his Maine Voices column of Aug. 12 (“Carbon monoxide looms as silent killer that must be reckoned with”).

Those who need to be informed of this silent killer are not the ones reading the papers or listening to the TV news of the deaths caused by CO.

Even in Falmouth, where detectors were given out and installed by our fire department, many neighbors never read the insert sent out by the town listing this service.

Having served on a variety of fire-EMS organizations, I can tell you that you do not want to see the end result of CO poisoning.

Sen. Diamond’s plea, “perhaps a well-known business would be willing to help finance the printing and distribution of print materials,” could ensure a mailing to every household in the state reminding them of this insidious threat. Is there anyone willing to pick up his challenge?
