I would like to publicly honor a distinguished group of people: the firefighters from the state of Maine who just returned from the Shasta Trinity National Forest, fighting the wildfires that are raging across so many different areas in California (“Maine firefighters return to welcoming arms after battling California wildfires,” Aug. 21) .

That area in which you were fighting those fires was my home. I am a former resident of Redding, California, and that area of Shasta and Trinity with the gorgeous mountains running through it was my playground my entire life until I moved to Maine.

From the fullness of my heart, I say thank you for sacrificing your lives to do what you are trained to do every day.

Even so, I wish to publicly thank you because you are special: You are protecting area that my own parents still live in and where so many other family and friends still reside.

We have suffered many wildfires in the region. Every year, one holds their breath praying that it is not going to be another bad year.

On behalf of my family and all in that region, I say thank you for your time, your efforts and your willingness to go where it is even hotter and drier that you may have ever seen.

My hat is off, tipped to you with a humble heart.

Thank you, Maine firefighters – you are my heroes.
