I am writing to express my support for Michael Brennan in response to the group so vociferously backing Ethan Strimling for mayor.

It is important to note that three of the four city councilors supporting Strimling against Michael Brennan – Jill Duson, Nick Mavodones and Ed Suslovic – recently voted against the city program to continue to offer General Assistance to asylum seekers in Portland, whereas Brennan championed the cause.

In their recent op-ed column (“Commentary: Ethan Strimling best choice for Portland mayor, city councilors say,” Aug. 22), Mavodones and Suslovic contend that Strimling has shown more leadership than Brennan.

As I understand it, Strimling was in the state Senate from 2002 to 2008 and is the head of LearningWorks (formerly Portland West).

Michael Brennan was in the state House of Representatives from 1992 to 2000 and in the state Senate from 2002 to 2006 and served as Senate majority leader. He was also elected mayor of Portland rather than Strimling (or 13 other candidates) in 2011.

There is no question that Brennan has had more leadership experience than Strimling.

I believe that we have not yet heard all the real reasons for the support for Strimling. I will be supporting and voting for Michael Brennan in the next election for mayor.
