Re: “Verso to cut 300 jobs at Jay paper mill” (Aug. 20):

It is prophetic what has taken place in the higher echelon. Another of our paper mills will shut down some of their operations. Why? Lack of orders, and taxes eating into cost and profits!

Jobs evaporating. Imagine while we clamor for more jobs in America, the answer lies in front of us, staring bold-faced at us! High taxes, energy costs, water costs and high taxes on operating equipment to manufacture the goods.

Having worked in paper mills for over 20 years, I’m aware of the demands of workers and unions. Paid days off for funerals and birthdays: It’s unbelievable. This brings up the cost of manufacturing and, above all else, encourages the importing of cheaper-priced goods from across the borders.

Folks, let’s play by the same rules. If we play the game, let’s have the same rules with our manufacturing sector. It’s very difficult to compete when you have two strikes against you when you step up to the plate! Where are the bygone days when we could read “Made in America”?

Cut taxes in half. Bring back the companies and jobs we have lost! Let’s see America prosper again. Let us moderate the spending and borrowing. Give our country a firm foundation to once again be at the pinnacle where we once were.
