I read with interest the Aug. 24 article by Kevin Miller on Judi and Wayne Richardson’s effort to close background check loopholes for gun buyers (“Group pursues Maine vote on expanding background checks for gun buyers” ).
But comments from David Trahan of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine baffle me completely. Here’s why:
1. How often do law-abiding citizens have sudden, urgent – and lawful – needs for guns that simply can’t wait for a thorough background check?
2. Why are some people against measures that would make it more difficult for felons and individuals with mental illness to obtain weapons? Are they afraid of what others may find in their backgrounds?
3. Which imposes the biggest burden on society: reliable background checks for gun owners, or laws with loopholes that effectively allow everyone to own a gun, regardless of background?
