It is strangely quiet for a Saturday morning, because the rifle range in Cape Elizabeth has been shut down. Now I hear the sound of birds, crickets and the background hum of bees. The peace and quiet are more of a relief to my soul and my senses than I expected.

I thought I had grown used to the gunfire, and well, laws are laws. But the silence this morning informs me that I haven’t grown used to it, and never will.

The sound of gunfire is not just another noise: It is the language of death, war, inner-city strife. Why should that be any part of anyone’s daily life, without necessity?

The laws are wrong that allowed residential development to grow up around the gun club. Cape Elizabeth should either refuse to permit the development or find a way to eliminate the gun club. Having it both ways is unconscionable.
