AUGUSTA (AP) — A former clerk at a Maine district attorney’s office has pleaded not guilty to charges that she embezzled an estimated $85,000 in restitution and supervision fees.

The Kennebec Journal reports 58-year-old Julie Smith of Skowhegan was arraigned Thursday at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.

The indictment states Smith took money paid as supervision fees and restitution in connection with the disposition of criminal cases handled by the district attorney’s office.

She pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of theft by unauthorized taking, which prosecutors say occurred between 2010 and 2014. She also pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of tampering with public records.
