Re: “Airbnb boom rattles Portland’s rental scene” (Oct. 12):

I find Airbnb to be very interesting and a potential boon to property owners. It brings folks into Maine to experience our great state, which is a big plus. Renting out a place is never easy work; keeping your home spotless before and cleaning up after renters is hard work.

However, I am curious about the tax obligations for the owners. Does this get claimed as income, and are taxes paid to the state? Does the owner collect occupancy taxes, like a hotel? Does homeowners insurance cover these rentals?

I think there would be value for the public in following this up. The pure income sounds great. What are the obligations for that?

I hope the Portland Press Herald can do a more in-depth story before everyone jumps on the bandwagon and starts leasing out rooms.
