Out-of-state money is once again trying to influence a Maine referendum question.

Question 1, the so-called Clean Elections Initiative, purports to keep big money out of Maine politics and improve the disclosure of who pays for political ads.

Question 1 says it would increase penalties for violations of campaign finance law. If you believe that, I have some inexpensive ocean frontage to sell you!

Question 1 also uses taxpayers’ money to give to the candidates. I don’t want my money supporting people I would never vote for, and that’s exactly the result if Question 1 passes.

Think of it this way: Do you want to buy bumper stickers for a candidate you do not support?

Serious candidates worth their salt can raise their own campaign money.

Vote “no” on Question 1.
