Please vote “no” on the multi-page Clean Elections referendum – Question 1 on the statewide Nov. 3 ballot.

Proponents would have you believe it is simply about transparency and getting big money out of Maine’s political campaigns.

But if you read the fine print, you will be surprised to find that the new public funds for Maine’s Clean Elections in Question 1 come on the backs of Maine’s businesses, small and large, and the business tax incentives they need to continue to invest in Maine and create jobs.

And the new transparency? Similar to the old transparency – same dark tint, only on different glass.

The $6 million of business tax incentives Question 1 proposes to eliminate are the very incentives Maine businesses rely on to grow and hire Mainers.

This is a tax increase on business, and its supposed transparency is illusory. Please vote “no” on Question 1 on Nov. 3.
