I’m a 27-year-old teacher and a graduate student at the Muskie School who has lived at the base of Munjoy Hill for 2½ years. I love Portland and hope to make Portland my home for many years to come.

Portland is a city that prompts visiting friends to start to plan their move. Even more importantly, though, it is a city that needs to continue to invest in housing for our most vulnerable neighbors, even when that blocks a view to Back Cove or the harbor.

We have a system of planning in place in which developments are carefully considered and then approved (or denied) using a democratic process. Portland’s Question 2 patronizingly proposes that we need extra levels of protections, because clearly we are in error if we are allowing changes to the city’s landscape.

Please vote “no” on local Question 2. Keep Portland moving toward a future that balances inclusion, desirability, natural beauty and culture.
