On Nov. 3, Maine voters will be asked whether or not to support a referendum that, at first blush, appears to be a vote for cleaner, more transparent elections in Maine.

However, on closer review, statewife Question 1 would expand funding for Clean Elections by using money otherwise set aside to help Maine businesses add jobs and expand Maine’s economy. Maine cannot afford this shift in our priorities.

Maine’s business community and Maine’s economy rely on these modest and conservative business tax incentives that Question 1 proposes to permanently eliminate. Our employers depend on these incentives to invest further in Maine and to create much-needed jobs in Maine. At a time when other states are offering larger incentives, we cannot afford to eliminate these effective incentives in Maine.

I urge every Maine voter to read the fine print, and cast a vote for Maine jobs Nov. 3 by voting “no” on Question 1.
