Volkswagen’s corporate deception about emissions testing has shaken the confidence of generations of loyal customers. The extent, depth and height of the knowledge of the fraudulent coding are under investigation.

There have been reports (“California VW diesel owners could get refund,” Oct. 12) that California may mandate a buy-back under state emissions law there.

There have been other reports that VW may offer to pay owners of the affected diesel engines compensation for the decrease in resale market value of the cars, now that the true emission behavior is known.

These remedies are interesting, but they address only a small part of the real issue. News reports suggest that the actual emissions were 40 times the reported “tested” emissions. The Oct. 17 issue of Science News reported that 3 million deaths each year worldwide are statistically attributable to air pollution.

We are breathlessly awaiting news of the equitable remedy that Volkswagen will propose to compensate the rest of the world – not just the wealthy car owners – for the deadly additional degradation of our shared atmosphere because of their corporate greed.
