TRENTON, N.J. — Princeton scored two goals in the second period on its way to a 3-1 victory over the University of Maine in a men’s hockey game Saturday in the Capital City Classic at The Sun National Bank Center.

Dane Gibson scored from Conor Riley early in the third period to get Maine (0-4-3) within a goal. Ben Foster scored an empty-netter for Princeton with three seconds left.

Kyle Rankin and Joe Grabowski scored in the second period for Princeton (1-1).

Rob McGovern had 24 saves for Maine, while Colton Phinney had 39 saves for Princeton.

WORCESTER STATE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Max Kirkwood made 32 saves as the Lancers (1-1) beat the Huskies (1-1) in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Patrick Germain, Nicholas Drill, Mike Moran and Alex Pommerville scored for Worcester State.

Matt Michals had 24 saves for Southern Maine.

University of New England 1, Hobart 1: Ben Pearl scored a power-play goal late in the third period as the Nor’easters (0-0-1) tied Hobart in their season opener in Biddeford.

Mitch Beyer scored earlier in the third to give Hobart (0-1-1) the lead.

FOOTBALL

BATES 10, COLBY 9: Trevor Lyons returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter to give Bates the lead, and the Bobcats held on to beat the Mules in Waterville.

Colby (1-5) took a 3-0 lead on a 26-yard field goal by John Baron in the second quarter. Bates (1-5) tied it on a 27-yard field goal by Grant DeWald in the third quarter, then went ahead when Lyons intercepted a pass by Colby’s Gabe Harrington and returned it 31 yards for a score.

Colby got within a point on a 1-yard run by Christian Sparacio with 13:31 left in the fourth quarter, but Bates blocked the point after.

HUSSON 40, SUNY MARITIME 14: John Smith rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns and Joe Seccareccia threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles (6-1, 5-0 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference) past the Privateers (3-5, 1-4) at Bangor.

Deon Wiggins had four catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns for Husson, and DJ Allen also caught a touchdown pass. Robenson Saintard rushed for a touchdown for the Eagles.

WESLEYAN 20, BOWDOIN 14: Lou Stevens scored his second touchdown early in the third quarter to give the Cardinals (4-2, 4-2 NESCAC) a 10-point lead early, and they held on to edge the Polar Bears (1-5, 1-5) at Brunswick.

Bowdoin cut the deficit to 17-14 on a 1-yard run by quarterback Noah Nelson with 40 seconds left in the third quarter, but Wesleyan responded with a 32-yard field goal by Ike Fuchs.

MAINE MARITIME 21, CURRY 20: Jacob Doolan scored on a 6-yard run and Chad Martin added the extra point to give the Mariners (2-5, 1-4 New England Football Conference) their first lead of the game with 9:59 remaining as they erased a 20-6 halftime deficit and rallied for a win over the Colonels (3-5, 2-3) at Castine.

After falling behind 14-0 in the second quarter, the Mariners got on the board on a 2-yard run by Michael Fahey with 5:36 left in the half.

Curry added another touchdown with 44 seconds left in the half, but the Mariners blocked the extra point to keep the deficit at 20-6.

James Ferrar capped an eight-play, 92-yard touchdown drive for the Mariners with a 46-yard run with 1:17 left in the third quarter and Fahey converted the 2-point rush.

Women’s soccer

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: Brittany DeGrooth scored her third goal 4:33 into overtime to lift the Anchormen (3-14, 1-6 Little East) over the Huskies (3-14, 0-7) in Gorham.

Gabrielle Turner had three assists and a goal for RIC.

Jessica Preble tallied twice and CC Pelletier scored once for USM.

GORDON 2, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Jill Kefalas scored off a scramble following a corner kick eight minutes into overtime to lift the sixth-seeded Fighting Scots (6-8-3) over the third-seeded Nor’easters (11-7) in a Commonwealth Coast quarterfinal at Biddeford.

Jackie Dickerson scored from Jessica Meader to give UNE a 1-0 lead 4:53 into the game. Gordon tied it in the 23rd minute on a goal by Kiersten Klose.

TRINITY 2, BATES 1: Taylor Kirchgessner had a goal and an assist as the fourth-seeded Bantams (12-5) beat the No. 5 Bobcats (7-7-3) in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Hartford, Connecticut.

Bates took the lead 7:58 into the game on an unassisted goal by Sarah Gutch.

BOWDOIN 3, TUFTS 0: Jamie Hofstetter had two goals and an assist as the Polar Bears (11-4-1) beat the Jumbos (4-8-1) in a NESCAC quarterfinal in Brunswick.

Maggie Godley also scored for Bowdoin and Rachel Strout had four saves. The Bobcats will play Trinity in the semifinals on Nov. 7.

JOHNSON & WALES 3, ST. JOSEPH’S 2: Kyra Selner scored her second goal of the game in overtime as the Wildcats (12-7-1) beat the Monks (10-7-1) in a GNAC quarterfinal in Providence, Rhode Island.

St. Joseph’s rallied from a 2-0 deficit on goals by Hannah LeBlanc and Angela Valenti in the second half.

Men’s soccer

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 6, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Komla Dogbey had three goals and an assist to lead the Anchormen (10-6, 5-2 Little East) to a win over the Huskies (2-14-1, 0-7) in a season-finale at Providence, Rhode Island.

BOWDOIN 1, TUFTS 0: Nabil Odulate scored from Patrick Kearon in the first half as the No. 6 Polar Bears (8-3-4 ) beat the No. 3 Jumbos (9-4-3) in a NESCAC quarterfinal game at Somerville, Massachusetts.

Bowdoin will play Connecticut College in the semifinals on Nov. 7.

Field hockey

FITCHBURG STATE 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Molly Richard and Julia Gimenez scored to lift the Falcons (10-8, 4-7 Little East) over the Huskies (8-12, 4-7) in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

The Huskies cut the deficit to 2-1 when Kaylie Andrews scored off an assist from Allison Ward with 17:17 left in the second half.

BOWDOIN 4, BATES 1: Rachel Kennedy scored twice to become the school’s all-time leading scorer and lift the Polar Bears (16-0) past the Bobcats (7-9) in a NESCAC quarterfinal in Brunswick.

Kennedy broke the record of 92 goals, set by Lindsay McNamara in 2008, with her first goal.

Kimmy Ganong and Nicole Barbieri also scored for Bowdoin, which will play No. 4 Amherst in the semifinals next Saturday in Brunswick.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, SALVE REGINA 2: Kersey Boulay scored on a penalty stroke to lift the Nor’easters (14-6, 11-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference) over the Seahawks (16-3, 10-2) in Biddeford.

Nicole Matarozzo and Vonde Saunders also scored for UNE.

Alexisse Clinger and Marissa Gagnon scored for Salve Regina.
