Re: “Videotaping of signature-gathering at Maine polls raises intimidation concerns” (Nov. 3):

Project Dirigo’s efforts to explain its attempt to intimidate and threaten people signing a petition are ludicrous at best.

Making sure the signatures are valid? The only petition they were targeting was the petition on background checks for gun purchases. There was no attempt to videotape, say, the right-wing effort to end welfare benefits for needy people.

Videotaping of any activity at a polling place should be illegal. People have an expectation of privacy when voting. The petitions were outside the door of the voting machines but inside the voting venue.

Project Dirigo’s attempt to curtail people’s right to freedom of expression (hey, Project Dirigo, check the First Amendment) is both dangerous and offensive.

Not only did they videotape voters but they also asked voters their names and addresses after they signed the petition. The correct response to that question should be a resounding “It’s none of your business.”
