Bowdoin’s top-ranked field hockey team was selected to host one of four regionals for the NCAA Division III tournament and will face either Husson or Keene State in a second-round game Saturday.
The Polar Bears (18-0) enter the tournament as the only undefeated team in Division III. Bowdoin was the NCAA runner-up last fall and has won four national championships in the last eight years.
The 24-team tournament begins Wednesday with eight games, including the University of New England (16-6) in a 6 p.m. home game against Becker (11-11). UNE will be making its second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament after winning the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship. Becker, the New England Collegiate Conference champion, won its last nine games to earn its first NCAA tournament berth.
Husson (8-9), the North Atlantic Conference champion, visits Little East champion Keene State (16-7) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The Husson-Keene State winner will play Bowdoin at 11 a.m. Saturday. Wellesley (16-3), an at-large selection, faces either UNE or Becker at 2 p.m.
The regional final is at 1 p.m. Sunday. The winner advances to the final four Nov. 21-22 at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
MEN’S SOCCER
After winning the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship for the second year in a row, Bowdoin (10-3-4) will play Plattsburgh State (14-4-3) on Saturday in an NCAA first-round match at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Bowdoin-Plattsburgh winner meets either MIT or Bridgewater State in a second-round match Sunday.
Thomas (13-4-1), the North Atlantic Conference champion, also will head to Massachusetts for a first-round match Saturday at Brandeis (16-2-1).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Bowdoin (12-5) received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament and will play Johns Hopkins (13-4-1) in a first-round match Saturday at Stevens Institute in Hoboken, New Jersey.
It’s the fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Polar Bears, who lost in the first round last year. If Bowdoin defeats Johns Hopkins, it would face Stevens (16-3-1) or Lesley (16-5) in the second round.
VOLLEYBALL
NESCAC champion Bowdoin (23-4) was matched up against UMass-Boston (12-15) in an NCAA Division III regional that starts Friday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The eight-team regional also includes matches between MIT and Regis, Babson and Roger Williams, and Amherst versus Johnson & Wales. Second- and third-round matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the regional moves on to the national quarterfinals Nov. 19 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Bowdoin and UMass-Boston will be meeting in the NCAA tournament for the third time in five years. The Polar Bears were eliminated by UMB in 2011 and 2012, but swept a match against the Beacons two weeks ago.
