CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Moctar Niang headed in a corner kick by Hunter Miller with only 15 seconds remaining in regulation Saturday, giving Bowdoin a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh State in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament.

Stevie Van Siclen needed to make just one save for Bowdoin (11-3-4), which will face MIT in the second round at 1 p.m. Sunday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BOWDOIN 3, JOHNS HOPKINS 2: Nikki Wilson’s goal with just under a minute remaining gave the Polar Bears (12-5-1) a win over the Blue Jays (13-5-1) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, at Hoboken, New Jersey.

Jamie Hofstetter assisted on the winning goal and finished with a goal and two assists. Maggie Godley contributed a goal and an assist as Bowdoin advanced to a second-round match Sunday against Stevens Institute of Technology.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 2, WENTWORTH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 0: Harley Chute scored her first collegiate goal off a corner kick from Taylor Littlefield in the 70th minute, and the fourth-seeded Nor’easters (13-7) knocked off the top-seeded Leopards (17-3-2) in an ECAC semifinal at Boston.

Littlefield added an insurance goal in the 88th minute, assisted by Edie Pallozzi.

UNE will face seventh-seeded Emerson at 2 p.m. Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

BOWDOIN 3, BABSON 1: Christy Jewett recorded 20 kills as the Polar Bears (25-4) advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament, at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Bowdoin took the first two games, 25-22 and 26-24. Babson (28-9) stayed alive by winning the third game, 25-21, but Bowdoin closed out the match in the fourth set, 25-20.

Bowdoin will face MIT at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the winner advancing to the national quarterfinals.

WOMEN’S RUGBY

BOWDOIN 67, MAINE 0: Addison Carvajal scored three tries and had a pair of conversions as the Polar Bears (8-0) dominated the Black Bears in the opening round of the USA Rugby Division II tournament at Brunswick.

Paige Pfannenstiel, Emily King and Georgia Bolduc each added a pair of tries for Bowdoin, which advances to the Northeast Regional to face Kutztown on Nov. 21 in Poughkeepsie, New York.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 64, THOMAS 24: Ella Ramonas scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Huskies (1-1) downed the Terriers (0-2) in the Salem State University Tip-Off Classic at Salem, Massachusetts.

Megan Pelletier contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.

NEW PALTZ STATE 72, ST. JOSEPH’S 44: Kelsi McNamara scored eight points, and Morgan Cahill had six points and nine rebounds for the Monks (1-1) in a loss to the Hawks (2-0) at the Skidmore Basketball Invitational in Saratoga Springs, New York.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 79, VERMONT TECH 48: Abigail Nielson scored 20 points, and Maria Veino came off the bench to add 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Seawolves (4-1, 1-0 Yankee Small College Conference) against the Knights (0-5, 0-4) at Randolph Center, Vermont.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 82, MAINE MARITIME 50: Fred Knight and Aaron Toman each had 10 points and four rebounds as the Huskies cruised past the Mariners in a season opener at Gorham.

Brendan Newcomb led MMA with 19 points.

COLBY-SAWYER 84, ST. JOSEPH’S 72: Wol Majong had 19 points to lead all five starters in double figures as the Chargers (2-0) held off the Monks (1-1) in the championship game of the Ramada Roundball Invitational at Biddeford.

Craig Luschenat paced St. Joseph’s with 20 points. Andrew Ruffen finished with 16 points and John Crawley added 15.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 90, HUNTER 73: Devin Thompson made five 3-pointers and scored 21 points in only 20 minutes, and the Nor’easters (1-1) jumped out to an 18-2 lead on their way to a win over the Hawks (0-2) in the consolation game of the Ramada Roundball Invitational at Biddeford.

VERMONT TECH 72, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 68: Jon Amabile scored 18 points and John Morgan added 16 for the Seawolves (2-4, 0-2 Yankee Small College Conference) in a loss to the Knights (3-3, 3-2) at Randolph Center, Vermont.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 5, MAINE 3: Maddie Elia scored a pair of third-period goals to lift the Terriers (7-6, 5-3 Hockey East) past the Black Bears (6-7, 3-5) in Boston.

Alyson Matteau scored in the first period for Maine, which took a 3-2 lead in the second period on goals by Catherine Tufts and Carolyn Menges.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, ST. MICHAEL’S 1: Mary Wirth, Julianne Sheehan and Taylor Fowler scored third-period goals as the Nor’easters (1-3, 1-3 New England Hockey Conference) rallied past the Purple Knights (1-4-1, 1-3) at Colchester, Vermont.

ST. ANSELM 6, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Jensen Hamblett and Lynn Kozlowski each had a goal and an assist for USM (1-3, 1-3 New England Hockey Conference) in a loss to the Hawks (4-0, 4-0) at Manchester, New Hampshire.
