The Coast Guard says a young man is missing after a canoe carrying three people capsized Sunday afternoon in Half Moon Cove, between Eastport and Pleasant Point.

The Coast Guard did not identify the missing man, but said he is 23.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that it received a distress call just after noon Sunday that a canoe had capsized and three people were in the water. Two of the individuals were able to swim to shore and call for help, but the third person did not make it to shore.

The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot boat from its station in Eastport along with an airplane and helicopter from its station on Cape Cod.

In addition, the Pleasant Point Police Department and Perry Fire Department launched a search along the shoreline for the missing boater.

Lt. John O. Mansolillo, the command duty officer at the Coast Guard’s First District Command Center, said the search mission covered the entire cove before nightfall.

The Coast Guard boat was to continue to search throughout the night.
