AUGUSTA — Maine’s attorney general says there is an increase in the number of state residents calling to report a phone scam in which someone pretends to be a debt collector with the Internal Revenue Service.

Attorney General Janet Mills says the scam and similar cons are “the most common complaint we receive.” She reminds residents they should not give credit card information to these callers, and they should hang up the phone immediately.

Mills says her officer received 61 contacts from Maine residents on Dec. 3 about the scam. Mills says the scammers can rig caller identification systems to make it appear the call is coming from Washington, D.C., when it is not.
