Former Maine ACLU head Shenna Bellows will temporarily serve as executive director of LearningWorks, the education nonprofit that Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling led for 18 years.

Bellows said she begins work Wednesday and will serve through August, while the Portland nonprofit goes through a strategic planning process and launches a national search for a new executive. Strimling was sworn in as mayor last week.

Bellows said she would not be a candidate for the permanent position. She unsuccessfully challenged Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November 2014 election and now works as a consultant to nonprofit organizations.

“Shenna Bellows brings a wealth of relevant experience to the position,” LearningWorks board President Will Kilbreth said in a statement Monday. “We are thrilled that she is willing to work with us during this transition.”

LearningWorks helps at-risk kids, low-income families and immigrants through a variety of programs.
