Ah, once again we are thrust into the silly season, as Officer Riggs refers to it in “Lethal Weapon.” As I gaze into my yule log fire, I wonder what makes people so silly during what has always been that “most wonderful time of the year.” After all, do we celebrate the holiday or Christmas season?

Long before political correctness, the whole world celebrated Christmas, the main anchor of the entire holiday season. Hence the Christian greeting, “Merry Christmas.” How silly it is to be offended by such a warm and simple wish.

Just what is meant by this greeting? The answer to this question is found in the Bible in Luke 2:8-21, where the angel of the Lord appeared to some shepherds to announce the birth of the Christ Child. Scripture says, “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’ ”

In a world rife with mayhem, violence and terror, isn’t it just a bit silly to be offended by a wish for peace on Earth?
