Two people were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland Sunday evening after their car ran into a city-owned tree on Cumberland Avenue.

Lt. Gary Hutcheson of the Portland Police Department said the accident, which took place in front of Portland High School, occurred when the driver of a 2004 KIA car, 47-year-old Esran Sambia of Westbrook, swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian.

Sambia, who was driving on a learner’s permit with her aunt, 65-year-old Maryanne Peter of Westbrook, hit the tree with the side of her vehicle. Both women suffered minor injuries but were transported to Maine Medical Center as a precautionary measure.

Hutcheson said the 30-foot-tall tree was destroyed in the crash. He said Sambia’s insurance company will have to pay to have the tree replaced.

The accident was reported at 7:50 p.m.
