Four Congress Street businesses have been awarded facade grants to improve their appearance in the Portland’s Downtown Arts District.

The storefronts include 578 Congress, the home of Strange Maine; 612 Congress, the former Anna’s Used Furniture; 785 Congress, which was previously a variety store; and the State Theatre marquee, according to a news release from the city.

The four businesses, which will split $24,000 in facade grants, were selected from eight applicants. The money from the city’s Façade Improvement Program will be used to enhance storefronts, awnings and signs.

Specifically, 578 Congress will receive $3,350; 612 Congress, $5,450; 785 Congress, $8,720; and State Theatre, $6,000.

The facade program requires a private match that is at least equal to the grant amount. The projects are expected to generate close to $55,000 in private investment on Congress Street, according to the city.
