The Red Storm clashed with Gorham, Cheverus and Thornton at the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, Jan. 2, emerging victorious on the boys’ side and taking second on the girls’.

“Middle-season meets, it’s not all about winning,” said Scarborough girls head coach Ron Kelly. “It’s a matter of finding out where you want to put kids. Some there tried new events.”

Kelly pointed out that, often, sure-fire States qualifiers will achieve that distinction early in the regular season. Then, other kids will work on improving through the middle or end of the regular season, in that time hopefully earning their own slots at the championship.

“There was improvement by a lot of kids,” Kelly said. “Ultimately, as we get further along in the regular season, that’ll get more kids to the state meet. Regular season meets get us ready for the end of the year.”

Kelly applauded a number of his girls, including shot putter Brady Stolz, new to that event.

“She started off the year not having qualified,” he said. “She started off around 24 feet, and not last week, but the week before, she threw it 31-and-change.”

Kelly likewise praised a number of his other athletes.

“Ellen (Shaw) was consistent,” he said. “My distance runners ran very well. Three of them, (Laura) Volan, Marisa Carbone and (Bethany) Sholl all had good races.”
