BRUNSWICK — Michela North scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Tufts University held off a late charge by Bowdoin College for a 53-50 victory in a NESCAC women’s basketball opener on Friday night.

The Jumbos (10-2) built a 13-point fourth-quarter lead on the way to ending Bowdoin’s eight-game winning streak.

Emma Roberson also scored 13 for Tufts.

Shannon Brady had 16 points and six rebounds for the Polar Bears (9-3), who never led. Marle Curle added 14 points, and Kate Kerrigan had nine points, six rebounds and four steals.

COLBY 64, BATES 58: Desi Smith scored 19 points, and Colby (8-3) used an 11-0 run in the final 5:50 to beat the Bobcats (3-8) at Waterville.

Chelsea Nason notched a double-double for Bates, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the teams’ NESCAC opener. She also dished out five assists.

Carylanne Wolfington added 17 points on 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc for Colby. Mia Diplock added 12 points and five assists for the Mules.

Lyse Henshaw chipped in with 13 for Bates.

(1) CONNECTICUT 76, HOUSTON 37: Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, Kia Nurse and Gabby Williams each had 13 points and the Huskies (13-0, 3-0 American) easily overcame a slow start at Houston (4-11, 0-4) for their 50th straight victory.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BATES 73, COLBY 69: Shawn Strickland made a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to provide Bates with the final margin, and the Bobcats (8-5) ended the Mules’ 10-game winning streak with a victory in a NESCAC opener at Lewiston.

Josh Britten scored a career-high 18 points on six 3-pointers and Strickland finished with 14 points for the Bobcats, who closed the game with a 10-2 run.

Colby (10-2) was led by Luke Westman with 14 points. Sam Willson chipped in with 12.

TUFTS 102, BOWDOIN 69: Tufts (10-2) built a 38-point lead in the first half against the Polar Bears (7-4) in a NESCAC opener at Medford, Massachusetts.

Bowdoin trailed 58-20 at halftime, after shooting just 25 percent from the floor.

Jake Donnelly led the Polar Bears with 13 points. Lucas Hausman added 11 points.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UNE 2, CASTLETON 1: Dylan Bengston assisted on the tying goal late in the third period, then scored 19 seconds into overtime to lift the Nor’easters (7-4-2, 3-4-1 New England Hockey) past Castleton State (1-12-1, 0-6-1) at Biddeford.

Trevor Fleurent pulled UNE even with 1:50 left in regulation on a power-play goal.

Mason Riley made 22 saves for the Nor’easters.

SKIDMORE 1, USM 0: Connor Pelkey scored a power-play goal 3:05 into the second to give Skidmore (3-10, 3-4 NEHC)the edge over Southern Maine (5-8-1, 2-6) at Gorham.

Jack McDonald made 25 saves for the shutout with 25 saves.

Huskies goaltender Kyle Shaprio stopped 22 shots.

AMHERST 0, BOWDOIN 0: Peter Cronin made a career-high 46 saves for the Polar Bears (4-5-2, 2-3-2 NESCAC) in a tie at Brunswick.

Dave Cunningham stopped 30 shots for Amherst (3-4-4, 2-1-3).

HAMILTON 7, COLBY 1: Truman Landowski and Neil Conway had a goal and an assist apiece, and the Continentals (7-3-1, 3-2-1 NESCAC) scored six times over the final two periods to pull away at Waterville.

Devin Albert scored for Colby (4-5-3, 2-4-1) in the second.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNE 7, BECKER 2: Gabby Crugnale scored a pair of goals and Kimberly Gosselin had a goal and an assist as the Nor’easters (6-5-1) cruised past the Hawks (1-11-0) at Biddeford.

Julianne Sheehan, Shannon Smith, and Gabriella and Marissa Clifford-Biederman also scored for UNE. Emily Corrales and Melissa Boudreau added two assists apiece.

WILLIAMS 7, BOWDOIN 1: Chelsey Stevenson and Emily Krueger each had two goals, and the Ephs (6-3, 4-1 NESCAC) scored five times in the second period in a rout of the Polar Bears (3-5, 1-2) at Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Miranda Bell scored for Bowdoin midway through the third.

WESLEYAN 3, COLBY 1: Jessica Brenna scored two goals to lead the Cardinals (3-6, 1-2) to a NESCAC win over the Mules (3-6-2, 1-3-1) at Middletown, Connecticut.

Colby cut the deficit to 3-1 when Katie McLaughlin scored 1:57 into the third.

Angelica Crites made 31 saves for the Mules.
