Former Biddeford city councilor Susan Deschambault, the current chair of the city’s Planning Board, announced late Monday afternoon that she will run in a special election for the state Senate seat for District 32 recently vacated by Democrat David Dutremble.

Dutremble resigned effective Thursday to focus on recovering from alcoholism. His term ends in December.

Gov. Paul LePage must make a proclamation for a special election to fill the seat until the end of Dutremble’s term. It is not yet known when the special election will take place.

Deschambault, a Democrat, is the third candidate to announce their candidacy for the seat in the special election. Last week, Steve Martin, a bail commissioner and retired police officer, announced he will run as a Republican, and former Biddeford mayor and state legislator Joanne Twomey announced she will run as a Democrat.

Whoever wins the special election will have to run again in November’s general election  to maintain the seat.

District 32 includes Alfred, Arundel, Biddeford, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman.
